In Europe, antimicrobial resistance is responsible for approximately 25 000 deaths a year with estimated annual costs at around €1.5 billion. Drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are responsible for two thirds of these deaths. Innovative measurement capabilities to quantify the penetration of drugs into Gram-negative bacteria are needed to combat these deadly bacteria. This includes reliable methodologies for biofilm characterization.
The in-depth quantification of biocide concentration in biofilms can be obtained with a technique called Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (NAP-XPS). With NAP-XPS the biofilm dehydration is avoided during analysis, thus the structure and chemistry of the bacteria and biofilm, and its biocide uptake, is preserved.
In this webinar we will demonstrate how Near-Ambient Pressure XPS (NAP-XPS) measurements can be used to study the surface chemistry of bacteria and biofilm samples. We will also present different preparation protocols for such samples.
